Project Story
Educational timetabling is a multi-dimensional and highly constrained problem. Generating educational timetables manually often involves numerous rounds of changes before they can be satisfactory. Usually, such a process takes several months, and often the quality of the timetables is compromised due to pressure to release the timetables on time. Automatic generation of timetables then seems to be an attractive alternative to a manual approach. But this approach is not without problems. In fact, most timetabling problems are NP-complete, and most researchers are interested in investigating efficient algorithms for solving the problem. In this project, a university timetable problem formulation is introduced by a genetic algorithm (GA) is presented to efficiently and effectively solve the problem. The proposed GA has a flexible representation that handles all the college timetables at once. Our main goal is to minimize the number of conflicts in the timetable. The timetabling problem can be described as follows. There is a finite set of courses C= {c1, c2 ,…, ck}, a finite set of rooms in which the lectures can occur R={r1,r2,…,r?}, a finite set of potential time slots for the lecture T={t1,t2,…,tm}, and a finite set of instructors I={i1,i2,…,in}. An assignment is an ordered 4-tuple (a,b,c,d). An assignment has the straightforward interpretation: “a lecture for the course a start at time b in room c and is taught by lecture d.”
